Gibraltar is a peninsula at the southern tip of Iberia, dominated by a single limestone ridge that climbs to about 426 metres. On a map, nearly all the streets gather on the western side, facing the Bay of Gibraltar. On the eastern side, steep cliffs drop almost straight to the Mediterranean, with barely a road along them.
The town is long and narrow. Main Street runs parallel to the shore, and tight lanes and ramps climb the slope above it. Reclaimed land, marinas and docks extend the western edge into the bay. At the northern end, the airport runway cuts right across the isthmus toward Spain. For decades the main road into Gibraltar crossed it at ground level.
Gibraltar has been British since 1713 and overlooks the strait between Europe and Africa. The Upper Rock is home to the Barbary macaques, the only wild monkeys in Europe. The runway stretches across the narrow isthmus from the bay to the open sea. It separates the town from the Spanish border and forms the strongest straight line on the map.
Europa Point
The southern tip of the peninsula, where the Rock flattens into a headland facing Africa across the Strait. It finishes the map with a clean coastal point.
