Honmachi is the historic centre of Yatsushiro, a city on the western coast of Kumamoto Prefecture where the Kuma River spreads into its delta before reaching the Yatsushiro Sea. From above, the older quarter is a compact knot of short streets and small blocks around the site of the former castle. The river passes to the north and the railway runs as a steady line to the east.
Beyond the centre the map changes character. Much of the flat land toward the sea was reclaimed over centuries, and it shows up as long parallel field boundaries and drainage channels that look ruled in place. This coastal plain is known for growing igusa, the rush woven into tatami mats, and the rhythm of those fields gives the edges of a Honmachi map poster an unusually regular texture.
Inland, the grid breaks up as the ground rises toward the forested mountains that frame the delta. The town is also known for the Yatsushiro Myoken Festival, an autumn procession of floats that UNESCO lists among Japan's float festivals. Kuma River delta
The Kuma River, known as one of Japan's swiftest rivers, widens and splits as it nears the coast, drawing broad pale bands across the northern side of the city before it meets the sea.
Reclaimed plain
West of the centre, reclaimed land runs toward the Yatsushiro Sea in straight, evenly spaced field lines and channels, a pattern that reads almost like graph paper in black and white.
