Mapastepec lies in the Soconusco region of southern Chiapas, on the narrow plain between the Sierra Madre de Chiapas and the Pacific. The coastal highway runs through the town and forms its main spine, with the streets arranged around it in a loose grid. Rivers coming down from the mountains cross the plain nearby on their way to the coast.
Toward the sea the land flattens into estuaries, lagoons and mangrove wetlands, part of a long protected coastal system in this corner of Mexico. Inland, the ground rises quickly into forested slopes. The town sits between these two very different landscapes. Around it, fields, pasture and plantations give the countryside a patchwork look on the map.

Streams coming down from the Sierra Madre de Chiapas cross the plain close to town. They draw thin, winding lines between the fields on their way to the coast.
