Despite its name, Pierrefitte-sur-Seine does not sit on the river today. It lies north of Saint-Denis in Seine-Saint-Denis, on land that rises gently away from the Seine valley. From above, the town mixes older streets curving around its historic centre, blocks of postwar housing and small plots of detached houses, all tightly packed within the larger Paris conurbation.
Transport lines give the map its structure. A main rail line crosses the area, with the RER station shared with neighbouring Stains, and major roads lead north out of Paris. The town is home to the modern site of the Archives nationales, opened in 2013 in a building designed by Massimiliano Fuksas.
