Ābderafī lies in the western lowlands of the Amhara region, far below the highland plateau and not far from the border with Sudan. The land here is flat and warm, and the area is known for large-scale farming, especially sesame. On a map the town appears as a settlement on open plains, with little terrain to bend its streets or limit its growth.
That flatness shapes the plan. Streets run straighter than in highland towns, blocks are broad, and the edges of the settlement meet cultivated fields instead of hills.
