Abejorral lies in the southern highlands of Antioquia, on a shoulder of land above deep river valleys. The town was founded in the early nineteenth century. It kept the classic Spanish-American layout: a central plaza with a regular grid of blocks around it. From above, that order stands out clearly against the folded, steep terrain on every side.
The historic centre is protected as national heritage in Colombia. It is valued for its well-preserved houses with balconies, courtyards and whitewashed walls from the republican period. The town was a starting point for families who moved south during the colonisation of the Antioquian highlands, and its name appears in many regional family histories.
An Abejorral map poster shows a compact, orderly core that stops almost abruptly where the land drops away. Beyond the last blocks, roads twist down the slopes in tight curves toward the valleys and neighbouring towns.
