Abū Ţisht lies in Qena Governorate in Upper Egypt, within the narrow band of cultivated land that follows the Nile. From above, the pattern is unmistakable: a dense town surrounded by small, irregular fields and irrigation canals, with the pale, empty desert beginning abruptly where the water no longer reaches.
As in much of the Nile valley, life here has long depended on agriculture and irrigation, with sugar cane and other crops grown on the fertile land. The town's streets are close and winding at the centre, loosening toward the edges, where canals and field boundaries take over and draw a fine web across the landscape.
