Acaponeta is in the far north of Nayarit, on the coastal plain between the Sierra Madre Occidental and the Pacific. The town sits beside the Acaponeta River, which gives the town its name. On a map, the river curves along one side of a regular grid of blocks and shapes the town's edge. Farmland spreads out over the flat plain in every direction.
Acaponeta is one of the older towns in the region, with a history reaching back to the colonial period. Its layout still centres on a main square and church. The main highway and the Pacific railway pass nearby, and the town lies on the long north–south route along Mexico's west coast.
