Adampur lies in the Doaba region of Punjab, between the Beas and Sutlej rivers, northeast of Jalandhar. It is a town of modest size set in flat, intensively farmed plains. On a map it has a dense centre of lanes and markets, with roads extending toward Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur and the surrounding villages.
The town is best known for Adampur Air Force Station, an important Indian Air Force base whose airfield also serves civilian flights as Jalandhar's airport. The Doaba has strong ties with the Punjabi diaspora in Britain, Canada and elsewhere, and many families here have relatives abroad. Large houses built with money earned overseas are a familiar sight across the district.
