Adra is a town in Purulia district in the west of West Bengal, on the edge of the Chota Nagpur plateau. It is best known as a railway town. It is the headquarters of the Adra division of the South Eastern Railway, and much of its layout is organised around the station, the yards and the residential colonies built for railway staff.
On a map, this gives Adra a distinctive double character. The railway lands show up as long, parallel tracks and a planned pattern of quarters, institutional buildings and open grounds. The older town and the surrounding villages have a looser, more organic street pattern. Ponds and small reservoirs, common across Purulia, appear as scattered shapes among the fields.
