Adrano Map Poster
Adrano stands on a lava terrace on the south-western flank of Mount Etna, in the province of Catania, looking down over the valley of the Simeto river. It is one of the oldest settlements on the volcano's slopes: the ancient city of Adranon was founded by Dionysius I of Syracuse around 400 BC, and remains of its walls survive.
On a map the historic centre is a dense, irregular mesh of narrow streets packed onto the plateau, with the square block of the Norman castle at its heart. Newer districts extend outward in straighter lines, while to the north-east the terrain climbs steadily toward the summit of Etna and the pattern gives way to orchards and lava fields.
The Circumetnea railway, which loops around the base of the volcano, passes through the town and adds a long curving line to the composition.
