Água Clara is a town in eastern Mato Grosso do Sul, on the BR-262 highway that links Campo Grande with Três Lagoas. From above, the town is a neat, regular grid of wide blocks laid out on flat ground. The highway runs along its edge, and straight roads lead away through the surrounding countryside.
The region is cerrado, the tropical savanna of central Brazil, and much of the land around the town is used for cattle ranching and, increasingly, for eucalyptus plantations. On a map, these large rural properties form an enormous pattern of rectangles and tracks. The town looks small and orderly at the centre of this vast working landscape.
