Ajaokuta lies in Kogi State in central Nigeria, on the River Niger downstream of Lokoja, where the Niger and the Benue meet. The town is best known for the Ajaokuta Steel Company, a huge integrated steel complex begun in the late 1970s and intended to anchor the country's heavy industry. On a map, its sprawling rectangular grounds, rail links and access roads form the largest and most distinctive shape in the area.
Next to the industrial site, planned housing areas were laid out for workers, with orderly streets that contrast with the more organic growth of older settlements nearby.
