Ajmer sits in a valley of the Aravalli Range in Rajasthan, and seen from above, the hills shape everything. Ridges close in on the city from several sides, so the built-up area runs along the valley floor instead of spreading evenly. The oldest quarter, with its narrow lanes and dense blocks, lies at the foot of the hill topped by Taragarh Fort.
North of the old city lies Ana Sagar, an artificial lake created in the twelfth century by damming a stream. On the map it appears as a large, irregular body of water with a ragged shoreline, lined in places by gardens and marble pavilions. Newer neighbourhoods, railway lines and the cantonment extend beyond it in a looser, more open pattern.
The city is widely known for the Dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, a Sufi shrine that draws pilgrims from across South Asia, and for its closeness to Pushkar on the other side of the hills. A steep hill rises above the old city, crowned by Taragarh Fort. Around it the street pattern thins out and gives way to the open, unbuilt slopes of the ridge.

Around the dargah the streets become narrow and tightly packed. They form a dense cluster that stands apart from the wider roads and railway corridors of the newer parts of Ajmer.
