Akaltara lies in the Janjgir-Champa area of Chhattisgarh, on the broad plain east of Bilaspur. From above the town appears as a compact, irregular core of lanes and bazaars. Newer residential streets spread outward from it, and the flat countryside is divided into rice fields and dotted with village ponds.
The railway gives the map its backbone. Akaltara has a station on the main line between Bilaspur and the east, and the tracks run across the town as a long straight stroke that separates one side from the other. Roads leave the centre towards neighbouring villages and industrial sites, which adds long connecting lines to the composition.
