Akonolinga lies in Cameroon's Centre Region, east of Yaoundé, on the Nyong River. The Nyong is one of the country's main rivers and flows west toward the Atlantic. Around Akonolinga, the river runs through a broad, low valley with extensive wetlands, so the town develops on the firmer ground above it rather than right along the banks.
The map shows a town laid out as a loose grid of streets and neighbourhoods on the rises beside the river. The main road connects it to Yaoundé to the west and to towns farther east, and a bridge carries traffic across the Nyong. Beyond the built-up area, forest, farm plots and village paths fill the landscape, crossed by small streams feeding the river.
