Akşehir lies in Konya province in central Turkey, on the slopes where the Sultan Mountains descend to a wide plain. The town climbs slightly toward the hills on its southern side, while the flat ground to the north runs out toward Lake Akşehir. That contrast between rising ground and open water gives the map an unusually clear structure.
The town is closely associated with Nasreddin Hodja, the witty teacher of countless Turkish folk tales, whose tomb stands here and who is celebrated with an annual festival. Akşehir was also an important stop on routes across Anatolia for centuries.
