Al Abyār sits on the plain east of Benghazi, where the coastal lowlands begin to rise toward the Jebel Akhdar uplands. From above, the town reads as a tight cluster of blocks with roads leading out across open land. On a map the built area stands out against the pale, fairly empty ground around it.
The street pattern is practical rather than planned for effect. A few main roads carry most of the traffic, and smaller lanes fill the space between them in short, irregular runs. Toward the edges the blocks thin out into fields, walled plots and scattered houses. The shift from dense centre to sparse outskirts shows up clearly in black and white.
