From above, the land around the town is almost level, divided into wide fields and crossed by seasonal watercourses and tracks. The town appears in this expanse as a concentrated cluster of streets and compounds.
Settlements on these plains usually grow around a market and a few main roads. Their residential areas are made of walled compounds that form blocky, irregular shapes on the map. The scale of the surrounding farmland, which stretches in every direction, gives the town a clear sense of place.
