Al Ḩazm is the administrative centre of Al Jawf Governorate in northern Yemen. The region lies on the edge of the great desert interior, and the map reflects that setting. The town is relatively compact, with streets and buildings concentrated around its main roads, and it is surrounded by broad open ground where the land is dry and settlement is sparse.
Al Jawf is a region of deep history. In antiquity it was home to South Arabian city-states that were part of the incense trade along caravan routes, and remains of ancient settlements survive in the wider area.
