Al ‘Idwah is in Minya governorate in Middle Egypt, in the narrow strip of fertile land along the Nile. Life here depends on irrigation. On a map, the town is a dense cluster of streets and buildings surrounded by fields divided into many small plots and crossed by canals.
The old core is compact, with narrow and irregular lanes typical of Egyptian country towns. Around it, newer streets are slightly more regular. Beyond the town, canals and drains run in long lines through the farmland. Farther out, the green valley stops abruptly at the edge of the desert, one of the most striking boundaries on any map of Egypt.
