Al Khafjī sits on the Persian Gulf coast of Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province, close to the border with Kuwait. From above, it is a planned town: broad roads meet at clean angles, and residential blocks fill a neat grid between the desert and the sea. Outside the built area, flat sand stretches inland with few features.
The town grew around oil. It lies in what was once the Saudi–Kuwaiti Neutral Zone, now the Divided Zone, where both countries share offshore oil production. Industrial areas and port facilities sit along the coast. In January 1991, during the Gulf War, the town was the site of the Battle of Khafji, the first major ground engagement of that conflict.
