Al Qaţīf lies on the Arabian Gulf coast in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province, just north of Dammam. It is one of the oldest settled places in the region. For centuries it was a fertile oasis, fed by springs and covered in date palms, trading across the Gulf. The palm groves are still a distinctive feature, though urban growth has reduced them.
On the map, the coastline is low and irregular, with shallow water and reclaimed land. Offshore, Tarout Island is linked to the mainland by a causeway, and its old fort sits at the heart of its settlement. The mainland city spreads in a mix of old dense quarters and newer grids along the highways to Dammam and Jubail.
