Aland is the headquarters of a taluk in Kalaburagi district, in northern Karnataka, close to the state border with Maharashtra. It stands on the Deccan plateau, in wide, gently undulating farmland where dark soils support crops such as pulses and jowar. The town has long been the local centre for the villages around it, with markets, offices and schools.
On a map, the older part of town is a tight weave of narrow lanes, with newer extensions and main roads pushing outward. Routes toward Kalaburagi and toward Maharashtra leave the centre as clear lines across the plain. Small tanks and field boundaries break the surrounding countryside into a loose, open pattern.
