Albania sits in the south of La Guajira, on low, dry ground between the Serranía del Perijá and the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. From above, the town is a small, tight block of streets surrounded by open scrubland. The lines on the map thin out quickly into tracks, fence lines and seasonal streambeds. Few maps show as clearly how much empty space can surround a settlement.
The municipality is closely tied to the Cerrejón coal operation, one of the largest open-pit mines in Latin America. Its haul roads and rail corridor leave long, straight marks across the surrounding land. Those engineered lines contrast with the loose, irregular pattern of rural paths. In black and white, that difference becomes the main story of the drawing.
