Alblasserdam is in South Holland, east of Rotterdam, where the Noord river meets the Lek. On a map the town is framed by water. The broad river runs along one side with the dyke and old industrial waterfront beside it. On the other side, the Alblasserwaard polder stretches away in long, narrow fields split by drainage ditches.
The town has a long shipbuilding tradition, and the riverbank still shows the large footprints of yards and industrial sites. Just to the southeast lie the windmills of Kinderdijk, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-known images of Dutch water management. The same system of dykes, ditches and pumping shapes the land around Alblasserdam.
An Alblasserdam map poster is full of fine, precise lines. The dyke road follows the river, residential streets fill the land behind, and polder ditches run in parallel strokes toward the edge of the frame. In black and white it looks almost like an engineering drawing of the Dutch landscape.
