Albufeira lies on the central Algarve coast in southern Portugal. The old town sits in a natural amphitheatre above the sea. Narrow, winding streets run down to the beach, and the whitewashed houses are set on sandstone cliffs. On the map, the historic centre is a dense knot of irregular lanes pressed against the shoreline.
Once a fishing town, Albufeira has become one of the best-known holiday destinations in the Algarve. The coast is broken into a sequence of beaches and coves, with the fishermen's beach right in front of the old town. To the east, the busy nightlife strip and hotel districts spread along the cliffs. To the west lies the marina, with its enclosed harbour basin.
