Ålesund Map Poster & Print
Ålesund spreads across several islands on the coast of Møre og Romsdal, with fjords and mountains inland and the open sea to the west. On a map, water is everywhere: narrow sounds cut between Aspøya, Nørvøya and Hessa, and the town's streets follow long, thin strips of land.
In 1904 a fire destroyed most of the centre, and the town was rebuilt within a few years in the Art Nouveau style, which gives it a remarkably consistent look. Above the centre, the hill of Aksla provides a famous viewpoint reached by a long flight of steps. The town has a long history of fishing and dried-fish trade.
