Alexeyevka lies in the east of Belgorod Oblast, on the Tikhaya Sosna, a tributary of the Don. The town stretches along the river valley, so its plan is longer than it is wide, with the river and its meadows running through the middle. Streets on either bank form partial grids that bend where the valley slopes rise toward the surrounding plateau.
The town holds a notable place in Russian agricultural history. In 1829 a local serf, Dmitry Bokaryov, is credited with producing sunflower oil on an industrial scale for the first time, and oil pressing has remained part of local industry ever since. Around the town the map shows wide fields crossed by shelter belts and ravines, typical of the black-earth region.
