Altamura stands on the Murge plateau in Apulia, in southern Italy. It is known for its bread, which has protected designation of origin status, and for the Altamura Man, a Neanderthal skeleton found in a nearby cave. The old town sits on a rise, an oval shape clearly distinguishable from the later grid around it.
Inside, the historic centre is famous for its claustri, small courtyards and cul-de-sacs opening off the main streets. The cathedral, founded under Frederick II in the thirteenth century, stands on the main axis. On a map, the claustri appear as a dense, branching pattern of tiny dead-end spaces.
