Álvares Machado lies in the far west of São Paulo state, immediately next to the regional city of Presidente Prudente. The two urban areas sit very close, and on the map the smaller town appears as its own neat block of streets, joined to its larger neighbour by main roads and gradually filling in with newer housing between them.
Like many towns that grew along the westward farming and rail frontier of São Paulo, it was laid out on a regular pattern of square blocks. That order is still easy to read from above, with long straight streets, a central square and the gentler curves of newer neighbourhoods added around the edges as the population grew.
