Alvin lies in Brazoria County, on the flat coastal plain between Houston and the Gulf of Mexico. Its older centre follows a simple grid aligned with the railway that helped found the town, and newer neighbourhoods spread outward in looser patterns. State highways cross the map and link Alvin north to Houston and south toward the coast.
Mustang Bayou winds through town in a meandering line that ignores the grid, a reminder of how low and wet this landscape is. Alvin is widely known as the place where the baseball pitcher Nolan Ryan grew up, and the town still marks that connection.
