Am Timan is the main town of the Salamat region in southeastern Chad. It lies on flat, open plains near the Bahr Salamat, a river whose water spreads into wide floodplains during the rainy season. On the map, the town sits as a compact cluster of streets in a broad landscape where water and dry ground change with the seasons.
The street pattern is simple: main roads and a centre with administrative buildings and a market, surrounded by residential quarters of low compounds arranged along sandy lanes. Roads lead out toward other towns and villages of the region, and the land around shows scattered settlements, fields and savanna.
