Ampahana lies in the Sava region of northeastern Madagascar, a part of the island that faces the Indian Ocean and has a long humid growing season. On a map the town reads as a loose cluster rather than a planned grid. A few main roads carry most of the lines, and smaller tracks branch off to homes and plots in no fixed order.
The Sava region is best known as one of the world's main vanilla-growing areas, and the land around towns like Ampahana is mostly smallholdings, forest edges and watercourses. In black and white, this shows up as open space broken by thin, winding lines. The drawing stays sparse and organic, with little of the dense built fabric of a large city.
