Anand lies on the flat plains of central Gujarat, in the region known as Charotar. It is known across India as the home of Amul and the cooperative dairy movement, and as the headquarters of the National Dairy Development Board. That history is visible on the map, with large institutional campuses set among the streets.
The older part of the city is a dense tangle of lanes around the railway station and markets. Next to it is Vallabh Vidyanagar, a planned education township with wider, more regular streets and many colleges. Anand Agricultural University adds large green plots. Around the city, the flat farmland is divided into small fields.
