Andes lies in the southwest of Antioquia, in the Western Cordillera of the Colombian Andes. The town is set in hilly coffee country, where steep green slopes, deep valleys and mountain streams dominate the landscape, and its streets fit into a relatively narrow strip of more usable ground.
From above, the urban core shows the familiar Spanish colonial pattern of a grid centred on a main plaza, but the terrain bends and compresses it. Streets climb and turn with the land, and at the edges the town gives way abruptly to plantations, forest and winding rural roads.
Coffee growing has long shaped the local economy, and the surrounding hills are covered with farms and smallholdings. An Andes map poster brings together the compact grid, the contour-hugging roads and the rugged mountain country around it, a composition shaped as much by geography as by planning.
