Angermünde is a small town in the Uckermark, the lake-dotted north-east corner of Brandenburg. Its old town still follows a medieval plan. An oval of streets was once enclosed by walls, and parts of those walls survive. The market square sits at the centre, and St Mary's church rises above the rooftops as the largest building in town.
The setting is typical of this glacial landscape: small lakes, gentle hills and wide fields. The Mündesee lies right beside the old town, and on a map its water pushes against the street pattern. The railway line from Berlin toward Stettin passes the town and adds a long, confident curve to the composition.
