Ankazobe lies in Madagascar's central highlands, north of Antananarivo along the national road toward Mahajanga. The land here is high and rolling, largely open grassland with valleys where rice is grown, and from above the town appears as a small, compact settlement along the main road.
The town's layout follows that road. Streets branch off to either side, houses cluster along the ridges, and the valley floors below are divided into the irregular terraces and paddies typical of the highlands. Not far away is the Ambohitantely reserve, one of the remaining patches of original forest on the central plateau.
