Anna is a settlement in Voronezh Oblast, set on the Bityug River, a tributary of the Don. From above, it is laid out in long, straight streets lined with houses and large gardens, a pattern common across the black-earth region of southern Russia. The river valley runs along one side and gives the map its main curve.
The Bityug meanders through low, green floodplain, with oxbow lakes and backwaters showing where the channel once flowed. Away from the river, the land rises gently into wide fields divided by shelterbelts, the lines of trees planted to protect crops from the steppe wind. These make a distinctive pattern of thin lines across the countryside.
