Apple Valley is a suburb in Dakota County, Minnesota, south of Minneapolis and Saint Paul. Its map is typical of late twentieth-century American planning. Curving residential streets loop around cul-de-sacs, a few straighter arterial roads carry traffic north and south, and schools, ball fields and parks fit into the gaps. Cedar Avenue is the main corridor through town.
Small lakes and ponds are scattered across the city, and green space is generous. The best-known landmark is the Minnesota Zoo, which covers a large wooded site on the eastern side of the city. On the poster it shows as a broad open area with winding paths, very different from the tight suburban loops around it.
