Appleton Map Poster & Print
Appleton grew along the Fox River in north-eastern Wisconsin, and the river still defines its map. It cuts through the city in a wide, curving valley, with a series of locks and dams that once powered paper mills. Downtown sits on the bluff above the north bank, and the main street runs parallel to the water.
College Avenue is the city's central spine, and Lawrence University occupies the slope between the avenue and the river, its campus paths visible as a looser pattern among the blocks. Around this core, a grid of residential streets extends outward. The Appleton map poster shows how the straight grid meets the curved river and gives way wherever the valley drops.
Appleton is also remembered as the boyhood home of Harry Houdini, and the city's paper industry gave it a place in Wisconsin's industrial history. Islands and old mill sites in the river appear on the map as small, irregular shapes, adding detail to the long line of the Fox.
