Ardon lies on the plain of North Ossetia–Alania, on the banks of the river that gives the town its name. The Ardon flows down from the high Caucasus to the south and spreads into a broad, stony bed as it reaches the lowland, and the town sits close to its course. From above, Ardon's streets form a fairly regular pattern of long blocks, typical of settlements in the region.
That regular layout and the open fields around it give an Ardon map poster a calm, orderly look. Straight streets run through the town, gardens and household plots fill the space behind the houses, and the river corridor adds an irregular, natural edge on one side that breaks up the geometry of the grid.
