Arjona lies in the department of Bolívar, a short drive south of Cartagena on the Colombian Caribbean lowlands. The land is low and flat, so the town appears on the map as a compact grid of blocks surrounded by open fields, ranches and wet ground. Nearby, the Canal del Dique links the Magdalena River to the bay of Cartagena and has long shaped the region.
