Arlington Heights is a village in Cook County, about 25 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. Like many suburbs in the region it grew along a railroad line, and its compact downtown still sits beside the tracks of the Metra Union Pacific Northwest line, which crosses the map on a long diagonal.
Around that centre, the village spreads out in a regular grid of residential streets, broken by parks, schools and a few curving later subdivisions. Major roads such as Arlington Heights Road and Northwest Highway divide the grid into neighbourhoods, and the result is a calm, orderly map that feels characteristic of the Midwest.
For decades the village was known for Arlington Park, a thoroughbred racetrack that closed in 2021 and whose site was later purchased by the Chicago Bears.
