Arouca lies in the district of Aveiro in northern Portugal, in a valley enclosed by mountains. The town grew around the Monastery of Arouca, a large religious house founded in the Middle Ages, and on the map the monastery's broad footprint still anchors the compact centre. Around it, roads twist out into the hills.
The municipality is part of the Arouca UNESCO Global Geopark, known for its geology, including the giant trilobite fossils found in the area. It is also home to the Paiva Walkways, a boardwalk along the gorge of the Paiva River, and to 516 Arouca, one of the world's longest pedestrian suspension bridges, which spans the same gorge.
