Artigas is the capital of Uruguay's northernmost department and sits on the southern bank of the Cuareim River, which forms the border with Brazil. Directly across the water is the Brazilian town of Quaraí, and a road bridge joins the two. On a map, the pair look like one settlement split by a winding green line, each side with its own grid.
The Uruguayan side follows the regular block layout common to towns in the region, with a central plaza and straight streets that thin out into open grassland. The Cuareim loops through wooded banks, giving the northern edge of the map a soft, irregular outline. The department is known for its amethyst and agate deposits, and semi-precious stones are an important part of the local economy.
