Ashton-under-Lyne lies on the north bank of the River Tame, in the Tameside borough of Greater Manchester. From above, the old market town centre forms a dense core of streets. Around it are terraced rows from the cotton era, and water runs along the southern edge. The river and the canals give the map several strong horizontal lines.
Ashton grew with the textile industry, and the canals made it an important junction. At Portland Basin, the Ashton Canal, the Peak Forest Canal and the Huddersfield Narrow Canal meet, and the restored warehouse there now houses a museum. The town is also the eastern terminus of the Metrolink tram line from Manchester.
