Avadi is a city on the western edge of the Chennai metropolitan area in Tamil Nadu. On the map, the railway line from Chennai runs straight through it, and residential neighbourhoods fill in on either side. Large fenced campuses break up the street grid, each appearing as a broad, open shape among the dense streets.
Avadi is known as a centre of India's defence industry. It is home to the Heavy Vehicles Factory, which has produced the Arjun main battle tank, along with other defence and military establishments. Those sites take up large areas of land and have shaped how the rest of the city grew around them.
