The streets are a dense mix of narrow lanes and older residential blocks, with newer layouts filling in toward the outskirts. The town is best known for its jallikattu, the traditional bull-taming event held during the Pongal harvest festival in January. Avaniyāpuram's event traditionally opens the Madurai season, followed by those at Palamedu and Alanganallur. It draws large crowds and wide media attention every year.
