Avenel is a community within Woodbridge Township in central New Jersey, and from above it looks like classic mid-century suburbia. Short residential streets form small, regular blocks. Larger roads frame the neighbourhood, and major highways pass close by. A commuter rail line crosses the area, and its straight track draws a firm diagonal through the gentler pattern of houses and yards.
The community is part of the dense web of towns between Newark and the Raritan Bay. Its edges merge into Woodbridge, Rahway and Colonia, and it is hard to tell on a map where one ends and the next begins. Avenel is also the site of East Jersey State Prison, a large correctional facility whose domed building is a regional landmark.
